Regenerative Medicine

BMC plays essential roles in the three key elements of regenerative medicine.

Regenerative medicine is a branch of medicine which utilizes healthy cells to repair or replace damaged cells, tissues or organs caused by disease or trauma. Knee osteoarthritis

One hundred and twenty one patients with grade 3 or 4 knee osteoarthritis injected with bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) showed significant improvements in joint pain alleviation and motor function (Themistocleous et al., 2018).

Osteonecrosis

Bone marrow cell implantation could be an efficacious treatment of early stages osteonecrosis. BMAC delayed disease progression, reduced the incidence of fractural stage and relieved symptoms even in long-term follow-up (Valérie et al., 2011).

Other procedure in the treatment of osteoarthritis

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) combined with microfracture and BMAC resulted in a neutral to overcorrected mechanical axis, cartilage fill, stable tissue quality, and improved KOOS scores in two patients with large symptomatic full thickness chondral lesions of the medial femoral condyle (Evan et al., 2017).

Delayed Union or nonunion

TTwo patients with delayed union or nonunion in femur, 5 patients in tibia, 2 patients in humerus, and 1 patient in ulna received the BMAC injections. All of 10 patients with delayed union or nonunion were healed after treatment. The mean time for new bone formation was 3.3 months (Trung et al., 2015).

Lumbar discogenic pain

Twenty six patients received autologous BMC disc injections. All subjects presented a substantial reduction in pain. Moreover, patients receiving greater than 2,000 CFU-F/ml experienced a significantly faster and greater reduction in ODI and VAS (Kenneth et al., 2015).

Spine fusion

Ten patients with posterolateral instrumented fusion for degenerative lumbar disease in 1-year follow-up showed good right fusion masses (allograft alone) in 4 patients and poor in 6; good left masses (BMC and PRP plus allograft) in 9 patients and poor in 1 in CT analysis. The results showed that BMC and PRP mixed with bone allograft increased spinal fusion rate (Vadala et al., 2016).
